Infectious mononucleosis signs

The virus spreads through saliva, which is why it’s sometimes called “kissing disease.” Infectious mononucleosis (mono) is a contagious illness caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The infection can be spread by saliva, and the incubation period for mono is four to eight weeks.
The virus typically has an incubation period of four to eight weeks, although in young children this period may be shorter. It can also be spread through other types of direct contact, like sharing a straw or an eating utensil. Researchers believe that mono may be spread sexually as well.
A strep test may also be ordered with the mono test to determine whether a person’s sore throat is due to strep throat, a streptococcal infection instead of or in addition to mononucleosis.
